Plastering and rendering, the good the bad and the disasterous!

When you buy an old property or even a hastily thrown together new property, plastering is going to be essential if you're going to achieve those beautifully smooth walls to decorate with nothing but a slick of Once. I recall when we had this place damp proofed, the previous owners had been keen DIYers - always ask when buying a house what they do in their spare time, if they have a penchant for DIY, run for the hills. They obviously weren't overly keen DIYers otherwise they might have had the forsight to put the dampproofing in before they left, instead they chose to cover it up with garish wallpaper and a radiator in every alcove. When the plaster was chisselled off up to the recommended height, the rest of the walls fell off with it. My ex-husband decided that he'd have a go himself in plastering the bare walls, but having seen his first attempt, which looked more like a snow scene on a Christmas cake than anything that belonged on a wall. We got some Plastering experts in after that, not only did they go through the house at the speed of light, I had beautiful crack free, silky smooth walls, and blown vinyl wallpaper and mind bending prints became a thing of the past. If you've only got a little bit to do then there are some great products on the market, but of all the DIY projects i have attempted, I think plastering should definitely be left to the experts for a perfect result.

Rendering companies to avoid in Morecambe and Lancaster

We had our house re-rendered a few years ago, the prices ranged from acceptable to ridiculous. We went for an acceptable price, which actually turned out to be terrible value for money in the long term. At the time the house had lots of little leaded windows and they smashed a number of them all over the house when they were removing the old render. They didn't replace them, but they knocked a bit off the bill, which as it transpired, came nowhere near to covering the cost. It wasn't until I got a roofer in sometime later for leaks that I discovered how rough they had been on my roof. Where they had rendered the chimney stack they had smashed all the tiles as they had gone up and down the roof instead of using a cat ladder. The roof could have coped with this, but it was where they had actually put their great clumsy feet through the slates and the membrane, then tried to fill it with blobs of render, where the water was now streaming through. None of this they pointed out to me when they were taking my money, knowing damn fine that the problem wouldn't materialise until after they were long gone. For the benefit of other people in the Lancaster and Morecambe area looking to have their property rendered I would not recommend that you even approach XXXXX for a quote and instead give Lee Woodruff (details above) a call.
